Driveway Excavation & Grading in Palestine, TX

Prep Your Driveway Right So It Drains and Lasts
Driveway excavation and grading in Palestine prepares the ground so your new driveway drains properly and stays stable. You can’t pour asphalt or lay concrete on unprepared dirt. The base has to be excavated to depth, graded to slope, and compacted before paving happens.
We handle driveway excavating and grading across Palestine and Anderson County. We prep the site, cut the driveway corridor, grade it to the right elevation, and compact the base. If you’re installing gravel, we place and grade that too. For asphalt or concrete driveways, we get the base ready and the paving contractor finishes from there.
Driveway Excavating
Excavating your driveway means digging down to remove unsuitable material and create space for the base. Topsoil, organic material, and loose dirt have to come out. What’s left needs to be stable enough to support the weight of vehicles without settling.
Depth varies by soil conditions and what surface is going on top. Gravel driveways need less excavation than paved ones. Asphalt and concrete require a thicker compacted base to prevent cracking and settling over time.
On properties around Northside Historic District where driveways connect to older streets, excavated depth has to account for the tie in elevation at the road. If the driveway grade doesn’t match the street properly you end up with a steep transition that scrapes low vehicles.
Driveway Cut
A driveway cut establishes the path from the road to the property. This involves clearing vegetation, removing obstacles, and cutting through any high ground that blocks the route. On sloped lots, the cut might involve significant excavation to create a passable grade.
The cut sets the driveway alignment and establishes drainage flow. Water needs to drain off the driveway surface and away from structures. If the cut isn’t planned correctly, water pools on the drive or runs toward the house instead of away from it.
We cut driveways to match site conditions and property access requirements. Straight runs when the terrain allows. Curves when necessary to work around trees, utilities, or elevation changes.
Driveway Subgrade Prep
Subgrade prep gets the excavated bottom ready for base material. After digging out unsuitable soil, the subgrade gets graded smooth and compacted. This creates a stable platform that won’t shift under the weight of the base and driveway surface.
Poor subgrade prep causes long term problems. If the bottom isn’t compacted properly, the base material sinks into it. That leads to settling, low spots, and eventually cracks or washouts in the finished driveway.
We use compaction equipment to pack the subgrade tight before any base goes down. This step gets overlooked by contractors who are in a hurry, but it determines whether your graded driveway stays level or develops issues down the road.
Driveway Grading
Grading your driveway sets the slope and elevation. Driveways need to slope away from buildings and toward drainage points. The grade also has to tie into the street at the right height and transition smoothly without abrupt changes.
Proper grading for driveway construction involves multiple passes with grading equipment to achieve the right slope and smoothness. We grade the subgrade first, then grade again after base material is placed, then do final grading before the surface goes on.
A driveway grading business that understands drainage will build crown into the drive so water sheds to the sides. Flat driveways hold water. Driveways with reverse slope send water toward the garage. Both cause problems that proper grading prevents.
Driveway Rough-In
Driveway rough in refers to the excavation and base prep phase before final paving. This is when the excavated driveway gets its shape, drainage is established, and the base material gets placed and compacted. The rough in creates the foundation for whatever surface is going on top.
For asphalt or concrete driveways, rough in includes placing and compacting aggregate base to specification. That base has to meet thickness and compaction requirements or the paving contractor won’t guarantee their work. We provide rough in that meets paving specs.
Residential Driveway Excavation
Residential properties need driveway excavation that accounts for proximity to the house, landscaping, and utilities. You’re working close to structures. Underground sprinkler lines, gas service, and water mains all run under or near driveways.
We locate utilities before excavating. Damage to an underground line costs more to repair than the entire driveway excavation and grading project. Careful excavation protects what’s already there while preparing the ground for the new driveway.
Residential driveway work also means controlling dust, keeping equipment off finished landscaping, and leaving the property clean when we’re done. That’s part of doing the job right in a neighborhood setting.
Gravel Driveways
Gravel driveways get the same excavation and grading work as paved drives, then we install and grade the gravel. Gravel install involves spreading crushed stone to depth and using a gravel grader to achieve the right crown and drainage.
Gravel grading has to be done carefully to prevent material from washing out. Too much slope and the gravel migrates downhill. Not enough slope and water pools. Gravel road grading creates a crowned surface that sheds water while keeping the stone in place.
We handle complete gravel driveway installation from excavation through final grading. The finished drive drains properly and provides a stable driving surface that can be maintained with periodic regrading.
Have an Old Driveway That Needs Removal?
If you’ve got an existing driveway that needs to come out before the new one goes in, that’s a separate process from excavation and grading. Old asphalt, concrete, or deteriorated gravel has to be removed, hauled off, and disposed of properly before new driveway work can start.
We handle driveway removal for properties in Palestine and Anderson County. The old surface gets broken up, loaded, and hauled to disposal. Then the site is ready for driveway excavation and grading to begin. If you need an old drive removed, contact us to discuss that phase of the project separately.
